Fleet management priorities have gotten smaller

Of course no logistics operator can afford to have their lorries or vans broken down at the side of the road as it’s losing them productivity. If they believed it was costing them around 100 minutes every time it happened they’d be doing something about it.

And yet this sort of level of lost productivity is happening right now. But not with the trucks themselves, this fleet is rather much smaller. I’m talking, of course, about fleets of mobile devices like scanners and tablets that are used at just about every point along the delivery journey.

Each time a connection drops out, or an application fails to perform as it should, or battery failure, it’s costing time and money, which research† reveals amounts to 100 to 110 minutes of lost productivity. And now that we’re seeing delivery times extending further into the 24-hour window, these ‘lost 100 minutes’ could translate into a staggering 23% of a mobile worker’s daily shift.

To put that in economics terms, the research claims that just one incidence of dropped connection per shift, for instance, could equate to $20,000 in annual support and lost productivity per mobile worker.

The research was conducted worldwide and manufacturing & logistics represented more than 25% of the respondents. The average number of mobile devices per estate was revealed to be 2,267 and yet only one in five respondents claimed to have complete visibility of their business critical mobility solutions.

Pivotal to minimising the impact of failure of business critical mobile solutions is their visibility and being able to manage them remotely, both of which are achievable through EMM and MDM solutions.

EMM has been proven to deliver higher productivity and save both time and money. Additionally, we know it improves security, facilitates software updates and gives companies more control and the ability to monitor their fleets.

But to put that into tangible benefits, this research revealed, for example, a 29% reduction in mobile devices returned to service depots showing ‘no trouble found.’ It also showed an increase of 9% in mobile devices being able to be fixed remotely.

There’s no doubt that EMM is playing a crucial role for managing device lifecycles as well as automating time-consuming jobs like adding and decommissioning users. But with only one in five respondents having complete visibility of their fleets it would appear that organisations are not exploiting the full potential of their MDM and EMM solutions.

As demand for faster delivery grows, logistics operators need to be more ‘fleet of foot’ and more diverse in their delivery options. But one thing’s for sure, their productivity is going to rely almost entirely on the reliability of their mobile device fleet. Having real-time access to critical information and having reliable devices is the only way mobile workers can navigate complex schedules and routes. Without them, they’re effectively driving blind.

EMM and MDM are too critical to leave to chance. You need to be ensuring you’re getting the maximum return on investment from your fleet, and arguably your mobile fleet is increasingly more important now than your artics!
